Childhood #1

We're conditioned to look at a photo of this vintage and laugh... but really, don't they have it so much better than we do now? Look at all the crap clustered around your living room, look at the horrible over-plush furniture, and all the faux finish bric-a-brac. Homes back then were so clean, fashions so sharp, and people put together in such a pleasing way. Why are we laughing? Because we're stupid.

I'm not laughing. This is an attempt by me to brandish brazen sentimentality on the site. I specifically have combed through the archives to locate pics of children in the sixties and seventies so as to remind me of my own childhood and perhaps others in and around my generation. You'll get a better idea as I put up more. I'm patently copying the Charlie Parker photo site I now contribute to and like that site would like this one to move beyond pure humor.

I should also, selfishly and vainly, confess that this - Look at all the crap clustered around your living room, look at the horrible over-plush furniture, and all the faux finish bric-a-brac - does not apply to my lovely wife and I, drawn together by a love of simplicity few others possess (although I absolutely understand where you're coming from with it). As such our house (no joke here) is a show house for the property management company that rents it to us. We hate clutter.

And now that I've admitted to the sentimentality of this series may I say how much this photo reminded me of my youth. Wearing a stupid tee and shorts and mindlessly playing about the den while my mom and a friend had coffee and cigarettes. My parents even have a faux Asian tree mural behind the living room couch like the one behind the couch in this pic. The pic really stopped me in my tracks.
